Prevention of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections: Catheter Care and Maintenance- Systemic infections associated with the placement of central line catheters, or CLABSIs, are the cause of significant morbidity and mortality. However, the risk of these infections can be reduced with proper catheter care and maintenance. This module will review some of the risk factors for CLABSIs and steps in the care and maintenance of central venous catheters that help in preventing or reducing the risk of these infections.
Describe the different types of central venous catheters.
Identify risk factors associated with central venous catheter associated bloodstream infections.
Explain the steps in catheter care that are critical in maintaining function of the catheter.
For a given patient, recognize inappropriate steps in the care of central venous catheters.
Describe complications associated with central venous catheters, methods to reduce the risk of these complications, and possible treatments.
