New Treatment Strategies in Schizophrenia

New Frontiers in Schizophrenia Management with Case Management in the Saddle- Known as one of the most debilitating diseases, schizophrenia is associated with high societal and economic costs, increased healthcare utilization, and poor quality of life. Schizophrenia affects roughly 2 million people in the United States. Chronic and often progressive in nature, the disease is characterized by a variety of positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms. Although schizophrenia is treatable, several barriers including poor treatment efficacy for negative symptoms, nonadherence, intolerable adverse events, complex treatment regimens, and a lack of coordinated care for the treatment of comorbidities compromise optimal patient outcomes.
This recording includes discussions and case studies focusing on treatment strategies for schizophrenia, overcoming barriers, and the importance of care coordination. Tools necessary to improve outcomes for patients with schizophrenia are also presented.
Examine the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia and unmet needs in patient management. Assess current and emerging therapies for the reduction of negative symptoms in schizophrenia, and what effect this may have on clinical, cost and quality of life outcomes. Provide evidence-based strategies in medication management and clinical management of patients with schizophrenia. Evaluate the rapidly increasing role of nurses and case managers in care coordination, adherence and quality, and how this can impact schizophrenia outcomes.
