Transitions in Care: Screening and Diagnosis of the Short Child- A normal growth pattern is indicative of a child’s good health and is a parameter that should be regularly monitored. Assessment of a child’s growth velocity requires accurate and reproducible height and weight measurements which should be plotted on the appropriate reference charts. A child’s target height can also be estimated based on the midparental height. Short stature, which is defined as a height more than 2.0 SD below the mean for age and gender, can either be a normal variant of growth or be associated with growth failure. Many non-endocrine or endocrine causes can be responsible for poor growth. Once the decision is made by the pediatrician to evaluate a short child, the selection of additional laboratory investigations will be guided by the results of the patient and familial history, physical examination, and growth charts.
