Improving Patient Care Through Technology

Our Interconnected World: Using Technology To Improve Patient Care- New computer and mobile-device technologies are changing the face of rheumatology practice. One of the biggest technology-driven changes has been the introduction of electronic health records (EHRs), also called electronic medical
records. Although EHR systems hold many potential advantages over paper-based systems, adopting EHR technology has been challenging for many providers. According to a 2013 study from the American College of Physicians, satisfaction and usability ratings for certified EHRs are slipping. Overall user satisfaction among providers decreased by 12% between 2010 and 2012 (from 39% to 27%), regardless of practice type or EHR system. In addition, the proportion of clinicians who were “very dissatisfied” with their EHR systems grew by 10% (from 11% to 21%).
New technology can be a bitter pill to swallow. But as lessons from patient education suggest, knowing why you need the pill, how it will help, and how to manage the side effects may make it go down easier. In this issue of Rheumatology
Nurse, we will review the goals, potential benefits and drawbacks, and federal requirements and incentives for implementing EHR systems. We will also examine other aspects of technology, including the use of mobile apps and telemedicine, that may extend the reach of rheumatology care.
1. Identify the primary advantages and disadvantages of
providing patients with access to their EHRs.
2. Summarize the criteria that must be met to fulfill the
meaningful use stage 1 incentive program.
3. Identify opportunities to improve patient care through
the use of various EHR functionalities.
4. Discuss ways in which telemedicine has been
incorporated into rheumatology practices throughout
the world.
